Definition:

The title tag is an HTML element that defines the title of a webpage. It’s what appears in the browser tab and, often, as the page’s meta title in search results.

Why It Matters:

The title tag helps search engines understand the topic of the page and is a key on-page SEO element. It’s also your best chance to grab attention in SERPs.

Title Tag vs. Meta Title:

In most cases, these are the same—but they can differ if your CMS or SEO plugin allows separate fields. The title tag is the code; the meta title is how you might customize the search snippet.

Even though they’re technical elements, think of title tags like headlines—optimized for both bots and humans.
